Beaudesert Emergency Service Cadets learn from local police

As part of the program that aims to expose the group of 12 high school students to how things work in a variety of emergency services including fire, ambulance and police, they were given a tour of the new Beaudesert police facility.

Beaudesert's senior police officer Ken Murray and Senior Constable Steve Ordynski showed the group through the various sections of the station including the interview, operations, fingerprint and evidence rooms as well as the holding cells.

Senior Sergeant Murray said the session started with a bit of excitement.

"As they arrived, we had some police cars leave the station with lights and sirens going to an urgent matter," he said.

"The kids were enthusiastic, the questions they asked were impressive and their attention to detail was on point.

"They learned about how we do things, our cars and accoutrements and how we use them to command and control and all those leadership qualities that make a good police officer."

Senior Sergeant Murray said he looked forward to seeing the cadets again next month.

"This is just the start of the Emergency Service Cadets police program," he said.

"We'll be going into different aspects of police work including highway patrol and crime prevention."

The cadets learned about evidence gathering, arrest procedures, weaponry and communication.

They also learned about effective communication and use of force and were shown some of the kit police carry with them including firearms, tasers, batons, bodycams, police radios, handcuffs and capsicum spray.

Some even tried bulletproof vests on for size.

At the end of the hour, the cadets impressed the police officers with their parade skills and thanked them for an informative session.
