Eat Local to feature spiced pumpkin ale in tribute to Beaudesert Blue

SCENIC Rim Brewery has collaborated with Stuart Oppermann from Oppy's Fruit & Veg ahead of 2019 Eat Local Week to create the unique spin on a traditional pale ale.

Brewer Mike Webster said his seasonal beverage, the Beauy and Blue Spiced Pumpkin Ale harnessed the flavours of the Beaudesert Blue pumpkin, created in the Scenic Rim in the 1920s by crossing seeds of the ironbark, button and crown varieties.

The creative Mount Alford brewer delicately crafted the new brew with Stuart's Coochin-grown Beaudesert blue pumpkins, rounding out the subtle pumpkin flavour with nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon notes.

Mr Webster said collaborating with local producers to showcase the Scenic Rim's unique flavours was at the heart of Eat Local Week for him.

"After last year's successful milk stout collaboration and sourcing lactose from local dairy and sheep farms, we sought to find another passionate farmer to explore new flavours with," he said.

"These great eating pumpkins have been developed and grown specially in the region.

"We love the colour of the skin and had to ensure the beer's name honoured this."

Mr Oppermann said it was a great collaboration to be a part of.

"We're happy that our pumpkins, grown in Coochin, are being used at the Scenic Rim Brewery just down the road to make this new beer - you can't get much more local than that," he said.

The pale ale is available at Scenic Rim Brewery and will feature at upcoming Eat Local events.

Mr Webster said the Beauy & Blue was an easy-drinking pale ale with character.

"All our beers feature different larrikins on their labels, and Beauy & Blue are great local larrikins to add to the collection," he said.

"Beauy is your quintessential salt of the earth farmer, and Blue, his ever loyal sidekick. They're a pair you'd expect to meet in any small town.

"A man who's never seen without a weathered Akubra, always has a story to tell and who'd acknowledge you with a nod and single finger wave as you pass his ute on a dusty road."

As a seasonal release, the Beauy & Blue Spiced Pumpkin Ale is now available on tap at Scenic Rim Brewery. It will be available at the brewery during Eat Local Week June 29 to July 7 and at their stall at Winter Harvest Festival on July 6.
