FIREFIGHTERS have contained a grass fire in a residential area at Kooralbyn this afternoon.
Residents were lucky to have avoided damage to their homes and property as the fire started in a backyard and moved to the neighbouring acreage block.
The owner of the second property, Janis Nicklas, said the fire came perilously close to her house.
“I was not at home at the time but it seems the fire started when a neighbour was burning branches and the fire got out of control,” she said.
“They called the fire department and they came straight away but the fire was out of control.
“It was 10 metres from the house, a metre from the pool and had made it right up to the two sheds.
“I am so grateful to the local firefighters for coming so quickly and doing an amazing job.”
A spokeswoman for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said two crews responded to a call about 1.30pm and arrived at Francis Close to find a slow-moving grass fire.
The firefighters created a fire break to contain most of the blaze and had managed to get the fire under control by 2.20pm, the spokeswoman said.
