IN SPITE of an early downpour there was not a parking space anywhere near the Beaudesert Showgrounds at 8.30am on Saturday as the crowds started turning up for the second day of the show.

Beaudesert Show Society president Ian Harrison said the morning animal events were all well attended but by Saturday afternoon a decision had to made about allowing the evening entertainment activities to go ahead in the arena.

“We made the decision to cancel the evening ring events because of the weather and the state of the arena,” Mr Harrison said. “There was some concern about vehicles getting on and off the arena and we had a chat with fire brigade and ambulance crews who brought a vehicle onto the ground to see how they went.”

Mr Harrison said only vehicles with four wheel drive capacity would have made it more than a few metres on the ground and the decision to cancel was made after considering pubic liability insurance criteria and workplace health and safety issues.

“At 3pm the decision was made and we reduced the gate price to $1,” he said. “The grounds were just as crowded as they normally are on a show Saturday, with people able to get under cover at the circus, Australia’s Living History and dinosaur exhibits and petting zoo.

“Competitor wise, all the horse events went through, the stud beef had all breeds and there were a heck of a lot of dogs.

“Looking around the ground, I think most patrons enjoyed Saturday and I didn’t see anyone cranky about getting their boots muddy.

“The fireworks were brought forward and the ground was full for that. I think if you asked the vendors how they went, they would say they did a brisk trade.”

Beaudesert local took advantage of the reduced gate price to take her children to the show.

“It rained a bit but it was still great and kids seemed to be having a lot of fun on the rides,” she said.
