SEASON OVER: The Beaudesert Kingfishers were eliminated from the QTOP Doug Lipp Competition finals on Saturday.

The Beaudesert Kingfishers’ hopes of back-to-back QTOP Doug Lipp premierships were dashed on Saturday, going down to Runaway Bay Seagulls 25-4 at Tweed Heads in the elimination final.

Beaudesert coach Keith Gee said it was a tough, physical encounter but his team never got on the front foot.

“They had big forwards and we just couldn’t make any inroads,” he said. “We were convincingly beaten by a better side.”

Gee said all involved were disappointed but it just wasn’t their year.

“It was someone else’s turn,” he said.

“It’s been a wonderful three years. “We’ve been to two grand finals, losing one, winning last year and making the finals again this season. “If you said that would be the outcome at the start, we would have taken it.”

Gee said he was proud of his players which he dubbed the marvellous 13 for the way they persisted tirelessly through much of the season without substitutions.

“I’ve been coaching for 20 years and I haven’t seen another side that could do it,” he said.
