The Boonah Brumbies under-12s lined up for their final match of the Queensland Christian Soccer Association season on Saturday at Coronation Park.
After a tough but hard-fought season, the bottom of the ladder Brumbies were hoping to finish on a high by upsetting the competition leading Blackstone Dragons.
It wasn’t looking good for the Brumbies early with Blackstone netting its first goal within minutes of kickoff.
However, Boonah lifted and started going toe-to-toe with its more fancied rival.
As the game opened up and moved from end-to-end, both units had their fair share of chances to beat the opposing keeper before the Dragons jagged their second..
Blackstone may have thought they were in for an easy end to the season but they didn't count on the unbreakable spirit of the team from Boonah.
Despite trailing 2-0, the determined Brumbies refused to relent without a fight and they pushed forward with purpose.
After three near misses Boonah finally fired the ball into the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.
From the restart they surged forward again, pressuring Blackstone’s goal but the half time whistle came before they could capitalise on the scoreboard.
Encouraged by the goal late in the first half, Boonah returned to the field with renewed enthusiasm but it was the Dragons who were on the font foot early, banging home a third goal.
Now behind 3-1, Boonah lifted in search of the goals that would get them back into the game.
With their mid-field feeding their strikers and creating a number of quality chances, it was a matter of time before they broke through.
At last, with less than three minutes remaining persistence paid off when the side slotted its second.
All fired up and only one goal down they took control of the ball and went on the attack, causing fans to believe an unlikely victory was possible.
The team was, however, unable to find an equaliser at the death.
The Brumbies were disappointed to be beaten by the clock but took consolation in the fact the Dragons went home knowing they didn’t do it easily.
Club representative Michael Henderson said congratulated his team on the resilience they displayed throughout the season.
“Great effort Boonah under 12's,” he said.
“After a tough season you gave us that never give up attitude and showed that you do have what it takes to push even the top teams.
“Let's come back next year and show them how much more you have to give and that cavalier Boonah spirit.”
Final score: Blackstone Dragons 3 vs Boonah Brumbies 2
