KERRY resident Susan Short is once again lacing up her walking shoes to raise funds for the Brain Cancer Foundation.
Ms Short said the Walk4BrainCancer event is a 25 kilometre trek from Pottsville to Fingal Head and will take place on September 30.
“Last year I did the walk in memory of John Shirley, who died quite suddenly of the disease,” she said.
“I have since learned more about brain cancer – most people don’t realise how devastating it can be until it happens to someone they know.
“A lot of other cancers get much more funding but more children die of brain cancer than from any other disease.”
In the lead-up to the event, Ms Short is fundraising by selling raffle tickets and this year she is joined by June Herbohn, who lost her husband to brain cancer and wanted to help.
“June is selling raffle tickets and so are my parents,” she said.
“People have been very generous already – I already have $1400 in donations.
“John Cahill is now a barrister in Brisbane but we went to pre-school together in Beaudesert and John Shirley’s daughter Kim was in our class too.
“When John saw that I was running a raffle on Facebook, he rang up to donate a getaway package for The W Hotel in Brisbane to the value of $1000,” she said.
“So anyone who buys a raffle ticket will have the chance to spoil themselves at a very luxurious hotel.”
Ms Short said raffle tickets were available by calling her on 0437 787 262 or buying them from Rod and Libby Venz or June Herbohn.
Tickets cost $2 each or 3 for $5, drawn on September 23.
