Holiday wishes and new year resolutions

The school holidays are in full swing, the countdown to Christmas continues and, as 2017 draws to a close, we can reflect on the year behind us and the new year about to unfold. In recent weeks I had the privilege of representing council as our Scenic Rim school communities recognised and celebrated our young people and their achievements - academic, sporting and social - acknowledging the importance of educators in shaping the future.

I was reminded of the amazing depth of potential of our young people and of how families have always been, and always will be, at the heart of our community. Across our school communities, our youth are encouraged to believe and succeed, to test boundaries and to strive to become their very best through learning, diligence and effort, setting them on a path for a bright future as productive members of society.

As I consider this in the context of our region, I renew my commitment to the integrated focus and shared vision for the Scenic Rim outlined in our community plan. Our Scenic Rim Community Plan 2011-2026 provides a strong foundation for the future, helping council to deliver the outcomes to meet expectations.

To this end, council will continue to invest in renewing and improving our community assets to ensure our best possible future. This will require a steady focus and concerted effort over a number of years to achieve our goals. We are working to ensure that we have not only strong and capable economies but also maintain our unique, character-filled communities and leave a strong environmental legacy for future generations.

But what of the legacy we leave for the next generation through the example that we set as individuals?

As adults in our community, we need to exhibit a standard of behaviour to which our children will aspire, a standard that is aspirational and seeks to uphold the best for our future, creating the environment of optimism and openness that will allow our youth to flourish and step forward as future leaders of our region. Perhaps that should be our New Year's resolution for 2018. I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas season and good health and prosperity for the year ahead.
