Queensland Symphony Orchestra assistant conductor leads musical workshop at Beaudesert

QUEENSLAND Symphony Orchestra assistant conductor Gordon Hamilton was impressed at the musical talent at Beaudesert State High School.

Mr Hamilton led a three hour workshop with the school’s newly formed orchestra on Wednesday, October 11 in preparation for an upcoming concert.

The event will see Beaudesert State High School students perform alongside the QSO ensemble on Friday, November 3 from 7pm at The Centre Beaudesert.

Mr Hamilton conducted the music students as they performed various repertoires during the workshop.

“The students were working very hard and it was great to see how supportive the teachers were of the them,” he said.

“The teachers are doing all the right things and their students’ performance is coming along well so I’m really impressed.

“This is definitely something to be proud of.”

Mr Hamilton said the concert would be a thrilling experience for the school’s orchestra.

Beaudesert State High School instrumental music teacher Jane Hawkins said the workshop with Mr Hamilton was part of the connection the school was making with QSO.

“We had an excursion earlier this year where students had the chance to watch the Queensland Symphony Orchestra rehearse,” she said.

Ms Hawkins said since then, the band and brass percussion came together to form an orchestra.

“This is the first time the school has had an orchestra,” she said.

“Both the band and strings were two small to perform alone so we decided to come together as an orchestra.”

Ms Hawkins said in preparation for next month’s concert, students practiced three music pieces in the two groups – brass and wood instruments with string instruments – and rehearsed together for one rehearsal before Mr Hamilton’s lesson.

“(The workshop with Mr Hamilton) is a huge learning curve for them because they have have had to learn new repertoire and tympany,” she said.

Ms Hawkins said she hoped the connection between the school and QSO would continue to bring students more opportunities in the music world.

Tickets for the concert costs $20 for an adult and $12 for a child or concession ticket.
