Mountain bike endurance riders return to Kooralbyn

Kooralbyn came to life on Sunday September 24 as VTT Adventures held the last race of the series at the newly rebuilt mountain bike track.

An unusually hot day following a prolonged dry spell saw competitors leave the track at the end of the four-hour event looking decidedly dusty.

The atmosphere was friendly and there was plenty of nostalgia as veteran mountain bikers recalled the glory days at Kooralbyn more than a decade ago.

Lesley and Warren Prior, who ride their bikes five or six days every week and competed as a couple, said they both remembered when Australian cycling legend Cadel Evans competed at Kooralbyn as a teenager.

“It’s fabulous to see how it’s all open again,” Mr Prior said.

“And it’s great to see old faces who have come back to ride just because it’s open again.”

Scenic Rim Councilor Michael Enright presented awards for best in race and best in series in all categories and  spectators and fellow riders were treated to a Tour de France style champagne spray from the winners’ podium.
