Show season exhibits the best of our region

How good are our region’s shows?

In March the Tamborine Mountain Show kicked things off for the Scenic Rim. Last weekend it was the Boonah Show and in coming months, the Kalbar, Canungra and Beaudesert shows will entertain locals and visitors.

The Beaudesert Times was fortunate enough to attend the Boonah Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon to sample the delights of the annual event.

The sights, sounds and smells of a country show are wonderful to experience.

From the excitement of sideshow alley to the events in the main arena and everything in between, the event proved popular with show visitors young and old.

In particular the junior cattle judging and wood chopping were fiercely contested events that drew in the crowds.

People came from all over south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales and were treated to great Scenic Rim hospitality.

Considering this show was going up against another popular regional show at Maleny, the turnout by people from outside the Scenic Rim was encouraging.

Mark down June 23-24 in your diary for your next chance to get a taste of a country show at Kalbar.

Miss Showgirl

Later that evening, the winner of the Miss Beaudesert Showgirl competition was announced at the Beaudesert Golf Club.

Our own Fairfax Media journalist Georgina Bayly of the Jimboomba Times took out the main competition, much to the delight of everyone here at the Beaudesert Times.

Georgina is a wonderful young woman who will do our region proud during the course of her 12-month reign as Miss Showgirl.

She is incredibly chuffed at being selected, so much so that she has not taken her sash off since Saturday night.

Calf scruffing

The issue of calf scruffing reared its head again after the Boonah Show announced it would have an abridged version of the event on the program

Animal Welfare groups and local farmers and show societies have butted heads over the event for years and our readers had their say in an online poll this week.

More than 65 per cent of respondents agreed calf scruffing should be allowed to continue. It remains to be seen whether the event will be on the program at any of the upcoming shows.
