Boonah’s choreography competition a success

THE competition was fierce at Boonah’s only choreography contest with about 20 dancers, including students from Kooralbyn Dance Academy, taking to the stage on Sunday.

The Barre School owner Julie Barns said the event was a success, attracting more friends, family and community members than previous years.

“There was a wonderfully supportive atmosphere among the dancers and the audience,” she said.

Ms Barns said there were many great performances, including Neveah Barry's improvised solo, Immigen Borland's classical ballet solo and Matilda Allan's emotive choreography to Mercy.

She said Rosewood School of Dance principal Lisa Benjamin was surprised at the number of contemporary dance entries and the talent on stage.

“Lisa found the judging very difficult due to the creativity of the dance pieces,” she said.

Ms Barns said her dancers were excited to be joined by another school, Kooralbyn Dance Academy, for the first time in the competition.

“My students thought it was great to see dancers from other dance schools, to get ideas and think in different ways about choreography,” she said.

“When you meet new people, you get to see what they have learnt like new routines and choreography, so this will really open up their world.”

Ms Barns said she hoped to create more opportunities for her students to work with other dance academies in future.
