TAROME man Greg Christensen will run for mayor against incumbent John Brent at the 2016 local government elections.
The self-employed business coach said Cr Brent, who has been a mayor for more than 20 years and is Queensland’s longest-serving mayor, had been in the job for too long.
Mr Christensen said the Scenic Rim lacked direction and needed new leadership.
“Incumbency can lock you off from listening and seeing a better future – there comes a time where fresh thinking, new eyes and being able to engage with people in different ways is necessary,” he said.
“There’s a real struggle for direction – our current path will be like the boiling frog, we’ll just keep swimming around until it’s too hot and we die.”
Mr Christensen, who has been canvassing support among residents and community groups in Scenic Rim for about five months, said voters wanted change.
“From the conversations I’ve had from east to west across Scenic Rim I believe there are a lot of people who are looking for a different approach, looking for a different way forward to what they’ve been experiencing,” he said.
“What I hear is the processes aren’t transparent, that (council) seems to lack the courage to engage with constituents when there’s a difficult issue.”
