The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs 22 extra blood donors in Beaudesert and 46 extra donors in Boonah to give blood in late July when the mobile blood donor centre visits the Scenic Rim.

Blood service spokesman Wes Thomas said winter was taking its toll on national blood stocks, and he urged new donors to roll up their sleeves to give blood.

“The Blood Service loses more than 1000 donations a day due to colds and flu,” Mr Thomas said.

“During cold and flu season, our national blood stocks come under real pressure.

“Donors who have a cold or the flu are unable to give blood until they are well again, so during winter our blood stocks take a real hit.”

He said 25,000 blood donations were needed across Australia each week just to meet patient needs.

“The need for blood never goes away,” Mr Thomas said.

“This is why the Red Cross Blood Service is putting the call out for new blood donors during winter.

“Last year, 217 blood donations were made in Boonah, saving the lives of 651 people.

“With the demand for blood and products increasing, we need to collect even more this year.”

Mr Thomas said blood donation numbers had been steadily declining in Boonah over the past 18 months.

“It would be fantastic if we could get the local Boonah community to rally together and support us by making an appointment to donate,” he said.

He said people in Beaudesert last year made 227 blood donations, saving the lives of 681 people.

“Giving blood takes less than one hour and each donation can save three lives,” Mr Thomas said.

“Blood donations regularly assist those suffering from cancer, as well as mothers to be, traumatic accident victims, surgical and orthopaedic patients.

“Blood donations also assist those suffering from medical problems such as heart, stomach and kidney disease.”
