A VETERINARY surgery built by Canungra based Hobbs Building and Interiors has been awarded for excellence by Master Builders.

The Windaroo Veterinary Surgery Animal Hospital took the gong for best commercial build under $5 million at the Master Builders awards ceremony held earlier this month in Brisbane.

Company co-owner Nikki Dudley said it was a first time a veterinary clinic was entered into the category, with the building beating hospitals and medical facilities entered to compete.

While Ms Dudley said Hobbs Building and Interiors specialised in building environmentally-friendly Scenic Rim homesteads, the company’s first foray into veterinary clinics will not be its last.

She said her company had begun this month to overhaul the interior of a Browns Plains shop front for conversion into a veterinary clinic.

“We can specialise in vet surgeries in the local area,” Ms Dudley said.

While it took about four years to turn the owner’s dream of Windaroo Veterinary Surgery Animal Hospital into a bricks-and-mortar reality, Ms Dudley said the build only took about one year.

The process also involved work with the building’s architect Stuart Osman Building Designs.

Ms Dudley said the premise was commended by Logan City mayor Luke Smith as a benchmark for home businesses in the region at its open day in May last year.

She said the clinic was built as an extension to the owner’s existing home, with the residential property rezoned for commercial purposes prior to its construction.

Colour scheme, architectural features, tiling and more are all matched to the home.

“That is why it fits so nicely into the residential street,” Ms Dudley said.

Hobbs Building and Interiors director Luke Hobbs said features of the Windaroo veterinary clinic at Janine Drive in Bahrs Scrub included a custom designed steel frame, panel cladding, handmade timber reception desk, granite kitchen bench tops, underfloor kennel heating and secured grassed outdoors area.

“I am honoured to receive this prestigious award on behalf of my team, and owe many thanks to my local tradesman and suppliers who worked tirelessly over 2-years to complete this epic project alongside me,” Mr Hobbs said.
