CUSTOM made billy carts and rockabilly style drew thousands of people to Tamborine Mountain in south-east Queensland on Saturday morning for the Garterbelts and Gasoline Nostalgia Festival Soapbox Derby.
About 2000 people lined Curtis Road to cheer competitors on as they zipped down the hill in their homemade speed machines, with some enthusiasts driving from interstate to be in on the action.
Tamborine Mountain police kept an eye on the speed of the carts, with Rochedale couple Ros and David Johnson proving among the fastest competitors in their matching silver bullet models.
Organiser Paul Biagini said he was thrilled with the turnout and the enthusiasm of the crowd.
He said some standout billy cart designs included the custom made prams, the matching husband-wife silver bullet models and the rustic cart raced by Tamborine Mountain woman Melanie Lightbody.
