THE RACQ CareFlight helicopter was called to rescue a man who was badly injured after falling about eight metres on Mt Barney on Friday (September 23) morning.

The 61-year-old Brisbane man was camping with three friends on the mountain when he is believed to have tripped and fallen at about 10.30am.

RACQ CareFlight spokeswoman Sophie Lawson said the man suffered pelvic injuries in the fall and that he was airlifted to the PA Hospital in Brisbane after being winched to safety.

“A paramedic was winched down and he was diagnosed to be suffering from suspected pelvic injuries plus he was floating in and out of consciousness,” she said.

“Once he was on a stretcher we winched him back up into the aircraft and flew him to hospital.”

The rescue follows incidents earlier in the year in the Mt Barney region when climbers died after falling on Mt Greville and Mt Lindesay.

Meanwhile, the RACQ CareFlight helicopter was also called in to airlift a 24-year-old Brisbane woman to Beaudesert Hospital after badly spraining her ankle at about 3pm on Monday afternoon.

The woman was hiking with a group of friends at the Lower Portals at Mt Barney when she slipped and injured her ankle. A CareFlight doctor and paramedic were winched down to the scene before the woman was winched to safety.
