PRESIDENT Barak Obama will visit Australia this month and one high school student from the electorate of Wright will be flown to Canberra to hear his address to Parliament.
Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz (pictured) said his ANZUS Essay Competition would determine the winner. The competition invites students to consider the history of Australia’s relationship with the United States and write a 500 to 1000 word essay explaining how they believe the relationship will develop in the future. The winner of the competition will be flown to Canberra and receive a tour of Parliament House as well as being in the Chamber for President Obama’s address. “President Obama is renowned as one of the greatest and most inspirational orators of our time,” Mr Buchholz said. “Being on hand to hear him speak in person is a fantastic opportunity and will be a memory that will last a lifetime. That’s what the ANZUS Essay Competition is all about.” Mr Buchholz said the competition was an opportunity for students to exercise their powers of persuasion. “This isn’t an assignment so there are no right or wrong answers,” he said. “What I want to see from these kids is some sort of grasp of the significance of the Australia/US alliance and how they believe the emerging shift in global power will impact on the future of that relationship.” President Obama will be in Canberra on November 17. Applications for the competition will close on November 10. For more information phone Scott Buchholz’s office on 5541 0150.
