SOME people when they are stressed watch a movie, listen to music or maybe even call someone to have a chat.

But not Tarome resident Alison George. When the devastating floods ripped through Murphy’s Creek earlier this year Ms George was mortified to hear that her daughter-in-law’s parents house had been engulfed by water.

With no news available on whether they were alive or dead, the stress of the situation was unbearable. So rather than sit around and worry, she threw herself into creating a one-off quilt.

By the time she finally found out that everyone was alive and well she had spent three days in her sewing room quilting with barely any sleep.

Now the quilt and its special story is going on display as part of a special exhibition of 500 quilts being mounted by the Queensland Quilters.

The exhibition will be on show at the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair from October 19 to 23 at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre where the Association’s members will showcase their works.

For Ms George the exhibition is the culmination of what was a very stressful period.

The final result is Ms George’s interpretation of the route the flood water took from Toowoomba through Murphy’s Creek to the Brisbane River weaving through triangles representing mountains peaks, towns and farmlands.

“I just locked myself away for a couple of days because no one knew what was happening,” she said.

“It helped relax me through a tough time.”
