THE peaks of the Scenic Rim will be adorned with huge banners and masses of people on Sunday, October 16 for a dramatic protest against coal and Coal Seam Gas (CSG) mining.

Hundreds of passionate local landholders, farmers and tourism operators who are worried about the future of the region are expected to be joined by walking groups from near and far to take to the hills for the protest with a difference.

The Protestors on Peaks event, coordinated by local group Keep the Scenic Rim Scenic (KTSRS), will be part of a national day of action against coal and CSG mining coordinated by anti coal and CSG group Lock the Gate Alliance.

Thousands of landholders from across the nation expected to take part in a variety of events on the day.

KTSRS member Heidi Ross said commercial television outlets had already displayed an interest in Protestors on Peaks, with expectations that the day will turn into a dramatic media fly-over event.

As part of Protestors on Peaks, a giant 10 x 4 metre bright yellow banner that reads, “STOP COAL AND COAL SEAM GAS” will be lowered down the face of Mt French.

Experienced mountaineers and bushwalkers will also tackle peaks including Mt Barney, Mt May, Mt Earnest and Mt Maroon to hoist their giant banners.

Other peaks will be accessible by car for those who cannot walk but would like to take part in the protest.

Ms Ross said some local landowners were even planning to stage protests on hills in their own backyards on the day, making banners to display on their properties.

Ms Ross said KTSRS was encouraging those locals to register with KTSRS so their properties could be included on a map of protest locations that could be filmed during the expected media fly-over. She said she expected Protestors on Peaks to be a good family day out.

“It’s a nice way to have a fun day with family and friends to show what you want for your area,” she said.

Protestors on Peaks will be held at 11am on Sunday, October 16, with walkers expected to set out in the early morning. For more information visit www.keepthescenicrimscenic.com
